Important Phone numbers in Germany

The following phone numbers are important in Germany, if something needs to happens fast, or just in case you should flounder with something.

In general

The code 0800 means that the call will be for free. Emergency calls to the police (110) or to the fire brigade (112) are also always for free.

"Gelbe Seiten" (=Yellow Pages) is the name of the German classified directory, where companies and enterprises are registered in braches. Apart from that the "Gelbe Seiten" work like any other phone directory and are also accessible on the internet under www.gelbe-seiten.de, you can alternatively use the following webite: www.goyellow.de

Over the internet you can also look up phone number from all over Germany under www.telefonbuch.de. It requires the name of the wanted person, resp. company or authority and the place where it is located.

The police or fire brigade emergency can be called for free from every phone booth, without a phone card or money. From  a cell phone these numbers are also available if there's no more air time credit on the phone.

Additional emergency numbers (poison emergency number, dental emergency number, or veterinary emergency numbers) are not nationwide uniform. You'll find these numbers in the phone book on the first pages. In urgent cases is recommendable to call "112" straight away. Local doctors and specialists are listed in the local phone book under "A".

The ADAC is Germany's biggest car club. Drivers who are members get breakdown aid for free. Small adversities, for example losing your car key inside the car are also fixed quickly and for free. The membership isn't too expensive.
The ADAC also helps non-members in case of a breakdown. You'll have to pay for this service, especially if it includes the towing of your car.

If you have a breakdown on the motorway you should use the orange emergency phones which can be found every 2 - 4 kilometers. Just follow the black arrows on the black and white poles next to the road.
